An Evening Prayer for a Sabbath Kind of Rest

Creator God, when You finished making the world,
You stopped and rested.
You weren't tired. You never are.
You looked at all You had made
and called it very good.

I don't stop like that.
I stop when I drop.
Even sitting down, part of me keeps working —
the list, the worry, the feeling I should do more.

Teach me the rest You built into the world.
Rest that is not laziness, but trust.
Rest that looks back at the day and says,
this was enough, and it was good.

Give me a little sabbath tonight.
An hour when nothing needs to be earned.
A quiet where I can simply enjoy You,
and the life You have given me.

The work will wait.
You rested, and the world did not fall apart.
And mine won't either.

In Jesus' name, Amen.

When to Pray This

Pray this on a Sunday evening, or on any night you want to stop without having finished everything. Say it when you set down your work, with the lamp low and the list put away.

A Verse to Hold On To

"And by the seventh day God had finished the work He had been doing; so on that day He rested from all His work." — Genesis 2:2 (BSB)
