An Evening Prayer of Thanks for Dangers I Never Saw (Psalm 124)
If You had not been on my side today, Lord,
I wonder what would have happened.Maybe it was a car that braked in time,
or a step on the stairs I nearly missed.
Maybe it was an illness that passed me by,
or bad news that never came.
I saw a few of those moments.
Most of them I will never know about.
You turned trouble away from my door
before it ever knocked.Your people sang about this long ago.
The flood would have swept them away,
the torrent would have gone over their heads,
if You had not been on their side.
But they escaped like a bird from a snare.
The net was torn, and they flew free.Thank You for every snare I slipped out of today,
and never even noticed.
Keep watch over me again tonight.
My help is in Your name,
for You made heaven and earth. In Jesus' name, Amen.
When to Pray This
Pray this at the end of the day, after supper or when you sit down for the evening. It fits especially well after a close call, or after any day you came through safely. Let the thought of what might have happened turn into thanks.
A Verse to Hold On To
"We have escaped like a bird from the snare of the fowler; the net is torn, and we have slipped away." — Psalm 124:7 (BSB)
