An Evening Prayer for Shelter Through the Night (Psalm 91)

Most High God, I come in under Your shelter tonight.
The day is over, and the dark is coming down.

The night brings its own fears, Lord.
A noise somewhere in the house.
A pain that only shows up after dark.
News that could come before morning.
You know every one of them.

You are my refuge and my fortress,
my God, in whom I trust.
Cover me with Your feathers.
Let me find refuge under Your wings.

I don't pray this as a charm against all trouble.
Your people have known hard nights.
But You promised to be with us in trouble,
and to answer when we call.
So I am calling.

Keep me through the dark hours.
Keep the ones I love.
And let me rest in the shadow of the Almighty
until the morning comes.

In Jesus' name, Amen.

When to Pray This

Pray this at dusk or at bedtime, especially on nights when the fears seem to grow after dark. Read it slowly with a lamp on, then turn the light off when you finish. Pray the last lines again for the people you love who are under your roof.

A Verse to Hold On To

"He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty." — Psalm 91:1 (BSB)
