An Evening Prayer of Thanks for Food and a Home

God of every table,
supper is over and the dishes are drying.
Before the evening ends, I give thanks.

There was food today, and it was enough.
Thank You for the taste of it,
the smell and the warmth of it,
and whoever shared the table with me,
or the quiet, if I ate alone.

Thank You for a kitchen to cook in,
a cupboard with something in it,
a kettle, a pot, a plate of my own,
and a home to keep it all in.

Tonight some people went to bed hungry,
and some have no kitchen or home at all.
Feed them, Lord, through hands like mine.
Show me what I can share this week.

My supper came from Your open hand.
Make me grateful, and make me generous.

In Jesus' name, Amen.

When to Pray This

Pray this after supper, while the dishes are drying or the table is being cleared. It is a good one for any evening when you are especially aware of how much you have. Pray it alone, or say it aloud together at the table.

A Verse to Hold On To

"For He satisfies the thirsty and fills the hungry with good things." — Psalm 107:9 (BSB)
