A Prayer of Comfort for a Funeral

God of all comfort, You are close to the brokenhearted, so we know You are close to this room.

Comfort the family in the front row, carrying the heaviest part of this loss. Comfort the friends who came from near and far, each with their own memories, each with their own ache. Comfort the ones who look composed but are barely holding on.

We cannot explain this loss, Lord, and we will not pretend it does not hurt. But we believe You are gentle with the grieving, that You keep count of every tear, and that no one here is mourning alone.

Wrap this family in Your peace — today, tonight, and in the long weeks to come. Be the comfort that remains when the casseroles are gone and the cards stop coming.

When to Pray This

This prayer of comfort can be read at any point in a funeral or memorial service — often after the eulogy, when hearts are most tender. It is also a prayer to text a grieving friend, or to read alone in the car before you walk in. Let it be a hand on the shoulder, not a performance.
