An Opening Prayer for a Funeral Service
Gracious God, we gather in this place with heavy hearts, and we ask You to meet us here.
We come to grieve honestly, to give thanks for a life we loved, and to remember together. Be present in every word spoken today, in every song, in every silence.
Steady those who will stand to speak, comfort those who can only listen, and let everyone who leaves this service leave a little less alone than they came.
In Jesus' name, Amen.
When to Pray This
Read this prayer at the very start of a funeral or memorial service, after the family is seated. It works for a pastor, a funeral celebrant, or a family member — no special training required, only a sincere heart. Pause after it; let the room breathe before the service continues.
A Verse to Hold On To
"Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted." — Matthew 5:4 (KJV)
