An Evening Prayer of Thanks for a Bed and a Roof

God of every good gift,
before I sleep, I want to thank You
for things I hardly ever notice.

This bed, with its familiar dip in the middle.
Clean sheets, or clean enough.
A pillow just the way I like it.
A blanket against the cold.

A roof that keeps off the rain and the frost,
so that on stormy nights I can listen to the weather
instead of being out in it.
Walls that keep the wind outside.
A door that locks.

Tonight some people have no bed at all.
They are sleeping in doorways and in cars,
in shelters, in camps far from home,
in hospital beds that are not their own.
Be close to every one of them.
And show me how to share what You have given me.

Thank You for this bed and this roof.
Don't let me take them for granted.

In Jesus' name, Amen.

When to Pray This

Pray this as you get into bed, while you can feel the blanket and hear the weather outside. It is a good prayer for a stormy night, or for an evening after you have seen someone in need on the street.

A Verse to Hold On To

"Then my people will dwell in a peaceful place, in safe and secure places of rest." — Isaiah 32:18 (BSB)
