An Evening Prayer of Contentment (Psalm 16)

Lord, You are my portion and my cup.
Apart from You, I have nothing good.

Tonight I want to count my portion,
the share of life You have given me.
Maybe it isn't what I once imagined,
but it is mine, and it came from You.
A place to sleep. People to love.
Enough for today. A chair by the window.
Some joys, some troubles,
and You, near me through all of it.

The lines have fallen for me in pleasant places.
I would not trade my portion for anyone else's.

You counsel me, Lord,
and even at night my heart learns from You.
I have set You always before me.
Because You are at my right hand,
I will not be shaken.

So my heart is glad tonight,
and my body can rest secure.

In Jesus' name, Amen.

When to Pray This

Pray this in the evening when you have been wishing for more than you have, or comparing your life with someone else's. Sit by a window if you can, and count what is yours as you read.

A Verse to Hold On To
