An Evening Prayer for Everyone Working Through the Night

Father in heaven, as my day winds down,
someone else's working day is just beginning.

I pray for the nurses on the night shift,
walking quiet halls and answering call bells.
For the doctors making hard decisions at three in the morning.
For the carers sitting up with the dying,
so that no one has to die alone.

I pray for everyone on the dark roads —
truck drivers, taxi drivers, ambulance crews.
For the police and firefighters on call.
For the bakers, the cleaners, the security guards,
and everyone stocking shelves while the town sleeps.

Keep them alert, and keep them safe.
Give them patience with the people they serve,
and kindness from the people they work beside.
When the hours drag and their eyes grow heavy,
give them a strength that doesn't come from coffee.

And when their shift is over,
give them good sleep in the daytime,
behind drawn curtains, in quiet rooms.
They watch over us. Please watch over them.

In Jesus' name, Amen.

When to Pray This

Pray this as you get ready for bed, thinking of anyone you know who is just starting work. It is also a kind prayer to pray if you work nights yourself, or if someone you love does.

A Verse to Hold On To

"He gives power to the faint and increases the strength of the weak." — Isaiah 40:29 (BSB)
