An Evening Prayer About the Words I Spoke Today

Lord, I spoke a great many words today,
and most of them I've already forgotten.
Tonight I give them all back to You.

Thank You for the good ones:
the hello, the thank you, the word of comfort,
the truth I told when it was hard.
Let them land softly and do their work.

Forgive me for the careless ones:
the sharp reply, the complaint, the boast,
the joke that cost someone a little.
Mend whatever they broke along the way.

And forgive me for the words I never said,
the sorry I swallowed, the praise I kept back.

Tomorrow, set a guard at my lips,
and put Your kindness on my tongue.

In Jesus' name, Amen.

When to Pray This

Pray this at the end of the day when you find yourself replaying a conversation, whether a sharp word you said or a kind one you left unsaid. Go back over the day slowly, and then pray these words.

A Verse to Hold On To

"Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O LORD, my strength, and my redeemer." — Psalm 19:14 (KJV)
