A Bedtime Prayer to the God Who Knows Me (Psalm 139)

You know when I sit down and when I get up, Lord.
And tonight You know my lying down.

You know which side of the bed I sleep on.
You know the thoughts I'll think as I drift off,
before I have even thought them.
You know the things I never say out loud to anyone.
And knowing all of it,
You still lay Your hand on me in kindness.

There is nowhere I could go to get away from You.
Not the farthest sea. Not the darkest night.
Even the dark is not dark to You.

Your thoughts toward me outnumber the grains of sand.
I could never count them.
If I tried tonight, I'd fall asleep counting.

And when I wake, I will still be with You.
Let that be the last thing I think tonight,
and the first thing I know in the morning.

In Jesus' name, Amen.

When to Pray This

Pray this in bed after the lights are out, when your mind is full of your own thoughts. It is a good prayer for a night when you feel unseen or alone.

A Verse to Hold On To

"If I were to count them, they would outnumber the grains of sand; and when I awake, I am still with You." — Psalm 139:18 (BSB)
