A Prayer for Aging Parents
Lord, I am watching my parents grow old, and I don't quite know what to do with it. The hands that once carried me now reach for the railing. The voices that once answered every question of mine now ask me the same question twice. It is strange and holy and hard, and I bring it all to You.
Thank You for every year You have given them. Thank You for the ordinary days I didn't know to treasure — suppers around the table, rides in the car, the sound of them moving around the house while I fell asleep. Let me not waste the ordinary days that are left.
Give my parents strength for this season. Steady their steps and their memories. Guard them against falls, against loneliness, against the feeling that they are a burden — because they are not, Lord. They are a gift.
And give me what I need to love them well. Give me patience when the stories repeat, gentleness for the hard conversations — the car keys, the stairs, the house — and wisdom to help without taking away their dignity. When our roles reverse and I become the one who carries, let me carry them the way they carried me: without keeping score.
Bless the doctors and nurses who care for them, and the neighbors and friends who check in. When I live too far away to be there in an hour, remind me that You are already in the room.
You have promised to carry Your people even to gray hairs. I am holding You to that promise tonight, Lord — for my mother, for my father, for all the years still ahead of us.
In Jesus' name, Amen.
When to Pray This
Pray this after a visit that left your heart heavy, before a doctor's appointment, or during a hard conversation about what comes next. It is also a steadying prayer for adult children who share caregiving with siblings.
A Verse to Hold On To
"And even to your old age I am he; and even to hoar hairs will I carry you: I have made, and I will bear; even I will carry, and will deliver you." — Isaiah 46:4 (KJV)
