A Prayer After a Tragedy

God of all comfort, we come to You with the news still fresh and no words that feel big enough. So we bring You our silence, our shock, our tears. You can read what we cannot say.

Be near the ones in the middle of this — the families whose world changed in a moment, the ones waiting by phones for word, the ones who saw what cannot be unseen. Do not let them be alone tonight. Sit with them the way only You can, closer than the ache.

Strengthen the helpers: the first responders running toward what others flee, the doctors and nurses working past exhaustion, the chaplains and counselors and neighbors holding grief that is not their own. Give them what they need for the next hour, and then the hour after that.

Lord, we do not understand this, and we won't pretend to. But we refuse to believe You have left. You keep a special nearness for the broken-hearted — so tonight, be as near as You have ever been. Bind up what is torn. Carry what is too heavy. And in the days ahead, when the cameras leave, stay.

Pray this in the first hours or days after terrible news — in your community or far away — when you want to pray but have no words of your own. It works alone, with your family, or read aloud in a group. It is honest about not understanding; God is not offended by that.
