Blessed Are Those Who Mourn — A Morning Prayer

Jesus, You stood at Your friend's grave and wept,
even knowing what You were about to do.
You did not hurry past the sorrow.

Some mornings I wake up grieving.
For someone I've lost.
For a life that didn't go the way I hoped.
For the pain in the world I can't fix.
For the wrong I've done and can't undo.

You call those who mourn blessed.
Not because sorrow is good,
but because You come close to it.
You promise comfort to those who grieve,
and You are faithful.

If I am mourning this morning, hold me.
If I'm not, help me notice someone who is,
and sit with them a while.

In Jesus' name, Amen.

When to Pray This

Pray this on a morning when grief is close, whether it is fresh or many years old. If you are not grieving today, pray it for someone you know who is, and think about calling or visiting them.

A Verse to Hold On To

"Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted." — Matthew 5:4 (KJV)
