Blessed Are Those Who Hunger and Thirst — A Morning Prayer

Father, I woke up hungry,
thinking about breakfast before I thought of You.

Give me a deeper hunger this morning.
A hunger to be right with You,
and to do what is right,
even when it costs me something.

Make me thirsty for justice too:
for the cheated to be repaid,
for the abused to be safe,
for the forgotten to be remembered,
for the truth to be told.

I fill myself with so many other things.
News, noise, worry, little comforts.
They never quite satisfy.
Only You can fill the deepest hunger in me.

So feed me, Lord.
And let me spend this day
hungry for what You love.

In Jesus' name, Amen.

When to Pray This

Pray this at the breakfast table, just before you eat. It also suits a morning when something unfair is weighing on you and you want to bring that longing to God.

A Verse to Hold On To

"Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled." — Matthew 5:6 (KJV)
