A Prayer for Someone With Dementia

Lord, I love someone whose memories are slipping away, and I don't know how to hold what they are losing. But You do.

Every story they can no longer tell — You were there for it. Every name that fades — You still know it. Every face that grows unfamiliar — You made it. When their memory fails, Yours does not. Nothing of them is lost to You. Not one day of their life has gone missing from Your keeping.

So I place them in Your hands, where they have always been. Guard their dignity, Lord. Let every person who helps them — in the home, the clinic, the care facility — treat them as who they are: a whole person, a long life, Your beloved child. Give them moments of clarity like unexpected sunlight, and comfort in the confusion when it comes. Even if they forget Your name, do not let them lose the feel of Your nearness.

And strengthen us who love them. Teach us to meet them where they are today instead of grieving only who they were. Give patience for the repeated questions, tenderness for the hard days, and grace to see that love outlasts memory — theirs, ours, and above all Yours.

When to Pray This

Pray this before a visit, after a hard phone call, or on the anniversary the disease has stolen. It is for spouses, adult children, grandchildren, and friends — anyone learning to love someone across the fog. Keep leaning on doctors, care staff, and support groups; God works through those hands too.
