A Prayer After Losing a Job

Lord, I lost my job.

I keep saying the sentence and it keeps not sounding real. Yesterday I had a place to be, people who needed me, a plan. Today I have a box of desk things and a knot in my stomach.

Let me grieve this honestly, because it is a real loss. The routine. The team. The version of the future I'd been building. I'm allowed to be sad about it, and I am. You can handle my sad.

And Lord, the quieter wound: who am I without the title? For years, "what do you do?" had an easy answer. Remind me that my name was never on that badge to begin with — it is written on Your hand. I was Your beloved child before the first paycheck and I am not one ounce less of one today.

Now, the practical fears. You know the math I've been doing at 2 a.m. The mortgage. The groceries. The insurance. The kids. You fed Israel in a wilderness with no economy at all. Meet every need, Lord — Your riches, Your timing, my open hands. Show me the wise next steps and give me humility to accept help.

When the shame whispers, shut it down. When the applications go unanswered, keep my head up. And somewhere ahead, in a door I can't see yet, prepare the work You have for me next.

This chapter ended without my permission. But You are still writing, and You have never once run out of pages.

In Jesus' name, Amen.

When to Pray This

Pray this in the raw first days, before the job hunt begins — the loss deserves its own prayer, not just the search. Come back to it whenever the 2 a.m. math starts again. When you're ready to look forward, a prayer for finding a job can pick up where this one leaves off.

A Verse to Hold On To
