A Prayer for My Grandparents

Father, thank You for my grandparents.

Thank You for everything folded into their years — the work of their hands, the meals from their kitchen, the stories that begin "back in my day" that I hope I never stop hearing. They prayed for me before I could walk. Some of what's best in our family started with choices they made long before I was born.

So today, let me do the praying.

Keep them in good health, Lord, as far as it depends on strength — steady on their feet, sharp in their minds, and well cared for by doctors who take time with them. Where their bodies are slowing, give patience and comfort. Give them joy that doesn't retire: friends to laugh with, sun on the porch, the phone ringing with voices they love. Don't let them ever feel forgotten — not by the family, and never by You.

And teach me to honor them while I can. Remind me to call, to visit, to ask the questions I'll wish I'd asked. Let them know their years mattered, that their prayers landed, and that their crown of gray hair looks like glory to the ones who love them.

When to Pray This

Pray this on Grandparents Day, before a visit, or any evening they come to mind. It works whether you're eight or forty-eight, and whether your grandparents live nearby, far away, or in assisted care. Better yet, pray it and then tell them you did.
