A Prayer for Living With Chronic Illness
Lord, this illness is not a season. It's the road I live on now. And today I need You on it.
You know what my mornings cost me. You know the appointments, the medications, the explaining to people who mean well, the plans I've had to cancel and grieve. You know the good days, when I almost feel like myself, and the bad days, when getting dressed is the victory. I don't have to perform wellness for You. What a relief that is.
I'm not asking You today for a miracle, though You know I would take one gladly. I'm asking for what You promised: grace that is sufficient — enough for this day, this hour. When my body is weak, be my strength underneath. When the long haul makes me bitter, soften me. When people forget, because chronic doesn't make headlines, remind me that You never do.
Thank You for my doctors and nurses, for every treatment that helps, for research still to come. Bless the ones who love me on my worst days.
I am more than this diagnosis, Lord. Keep showing me who.
In Jesus' name, Amen.
When to Pray This
Pray this on flare days, waiting-room days, or the ordinary Tuesdays when the illness is simply still there. It's written for the person who is ill, in their own voice — honest, unhurried, no pressure to be inspiring. Keep your care plan and your care team; this prayer works alongside them, never instead.
A Verse to Hold On To
"My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness." — 2 Corinthians 12:9 (KJV)
